Hi everyone,

Back to school shopping can be a lot of fun, but it can also be stressful – after all, how are you supposed to know if a trend that’s popular now won’t be old news before the start of next semester? That’s why I recommend stocking up on a few key staples that will stay timeless as trends come and go.  These are the pieces that go with almost everything and balance out the more daring pieces you’ll rock.  As you’re going shopping this fall, make sure these 10 style staples are on your list:

1.) Cardigan: Ahh, the classic cardigan.  This staple is not only stylish, but extremely versatile.  Pick one in a solid color like gray or cream and layer away!  They’re as comfy as they are chic :)

2.) Jeans: Jean trends can change in the blink of an eye (remember flares??), so it’s important to find a pair that flatters your figure rather than follows a trend. If you’d rather rock boot-cut than skinny, go for it! Darker wash jeans are versatile because you can easily transition them to night.

3.) Blazer: Blazers are the perfect staple because they go with everything – you can dress them up and dress them down. Find one in a loose, straight fit for everyday wear (the form-fitting ones are best for more formal spaces, like the workplace).

4.) Flats: You can never go wrong with a sleek pair of flats!  Loafers and oxfords are still a huge trend for fall and look great with skinny jeans, skirts, dresses and more. If your style is more feminine, try something with a pointed toe.

5.) Tee: A simple tee will never go out of style. Like cardigans, they’re great for layering – finds= ones in neutral colors like white, black and gray to pair with almost everything. They’re especially great for tucking into high-waisted shorts and skirts!

6.) Solid button-up: As summer transitions to fall, a solid-colored button up is perfect for throwing over any outfit.  It’s lighter than a blazer, but just as versatile.  I recommend choosing a white or chambray version – you can wear it unbuttoned, buttoned up or even tie it around your waist (yes, this is a trend that might just be making a comeback…)

7.) Modest shorts: Most schools have a dress code that requires shorts to be on the longer side, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on them altogether.  Sure, your denim cutoffs might be better off stored for next summer, but there are plenty of other options out there that are perfect for fall. Tone down all that leg by pairing your shorts with flats, sandals, or ankle boots–not heels–and balance things off with a chunky knit sweater on top.

8.) Tote bag: A tote bag is great because it can double up as a backpack – just make sure you aren’t putting too many things in there to avoid back problems! A tote bag can be used well beyond school, so find one in a classic shape and color that will last you for a long time.

9.) Lightweight scarf: Scarves are the easiest way to spice up any outfit.  You can wrap them around your neck, wear them as headbands or tie one onto your tote for a pretty touch!

10) Tank top: The ultimate layering item, tank tops are a must for any girl’s closet.  Buy ones in basic colors like white, black and nude to wear with cardigans, tucked into shorts or under sheer blouses.
