By now, we all know that SPF is vital for our skin, especially during the summer months. But did you know your hair might need some sun protection too? According to Allure, 100 hours of direct sunlight on your hair is as damaging as having straight bleach on it for 30 minutes. That’s crazy!! The free radicals that age your skin can also weaken your hair and make it more prone to damage. Whether or not your hair is color-treated, UV rays can break down the pigments in your hair and lead to dull, faded hair color.
So what’s a girl to do? Instead of saying bye, bye to the beach, try these simple tips to protect your lustrous locks instead:
+Protect: Just like your favorite moisturizer, find hair products that have UVA/UVB protection in them. There are leave-in conditioners, mousses, finishing sprays and beach sprays now that all contain UV filters to protect your hair from the sun’s rays. Or, try a non-greasy hair sunscreen like Redken’s Color Extend Sun Solar Screen with SPF 12. You can even make your own DIY hair sunscreen – simply dilute 2-3 teaspoons of your normal sunscreen with a cup of water and spray away!
+Cover up: Toss on a chic, floppy hat to provide a barrier between your hair and the sun. Or, tie on a cute scarf! Since the ends of your hair are the oldest and weakest part, try tucking them in a bun to protect them
+Avoid alcohol, peroxide and lemon-based products: These ingredients will cause your hair to dry out at a much faster rate when under direct sunlight. Though squeezing lemon juice on your strands and going in the sun might lighten them, it’s not worth the extra damage you’re doing to your hair.
+ Repair: Find a super hydrating hair mask to use once every week to repair your locks. You can make one yourself, or find one with nourishing ingredients like keratin, Shea butter or argan oil.
+ Clarify: Use a clarifying shampoo or DIY rinse once every one or two weeks to remove build up from any SPF products you are using on your hair. Your hair will feel squeaky clean afterwards!
