Hi everyone,
We all want gorgeous, glossy hair. But the reality is most of us are damaging our hair on daily basis without even knowing it. So today I’m spilling some healthy hair secrets. Get ready for those lustrous locks!
1. Let Your Hair Down – regularly pulling hair back in a ponytail or bun too tightly can cause damage. And removing hair elastics often leads to breakage. When it just must go up, opt for hair ties that slide easily out of hair.
2. Don’t Wash Everyday – washing hair too frequently strips it of its natural oils, which actually causes the scalp to produce more oil. If you are in a pattern of everyday washing, skipping a shampoo probably makes for a greasy head of hair. It will take some time for your scalp to adjust to less frequent washes. But be patient, eventually your hair will thank you.
3. Brush Before Washing – when you do wash your hair, brush it beforehand. Not only does pre-shower brushing make for fewer post-shower tangles, but brushing also dissolves dirt and product build up and disperses hair’s natural oils. Boar bristle brushes are great for distributing oils evenly from root to tip. They are also extremely gentle.

4. Never Brush When Wet – Hair stretches and is most prone to breakage when it’s wet. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently untangle knots and save the brush for when hair is at least 90% dry.
5. Dry with Care – rather than using a towel, dry hair with an old, worn-in, super soft tee shirt. And pat dry; don’t rub. Rubbing hair with a towel roughs up the cuticle, which can cause frizz and breakage.
6. Watch the Water Temp – hot water is drying, to your skin and to your hair. Wash hair under tepid water and do your final rinse with the coldest blast you can handle. Cold water will seal the cuticle, promoting shiny hair.
7. Condition. Condition. Condition – you should condition hair every time it is wet, but only the ends. Just like you really only need to shampoo the scalp, conditioner is only needed on the ends, where the hair is much drier. And once a week, use a deep conditioning mask all over. For extra healing, after you’ve applied the mask cover your hair with a shower cap, this locks in the moisture and the heat from the shower will take care of the rest.

8. Cool it with Heat Styling – hot tools like hair dryers and curling irons are very damaging to hair. Embrace your hair’s natural state as often as possible. When you do use hot tools be sure to protect hair first with a product that coats the cuticle—creating a barrier between the hair and the heat. And watch the temperature setting too; using hot tools on high settings can cause hair to become dry and brittle. Start at the lowest setting and work up if necessary.
9. Color with Caution – if you color your hair, try to stay as close to your natural color as possible. The more drastic the color difference, the more ammonia, bleach or other harsh chemicals were used to get it there.

10. Sleep on Silk – silk pillowcases are much smoother than cotton pillowcases, which means less tugging and tangling, and therefore less breakage and damage. Sleeping on silk also reduces frizz.

After I wash my hair (I usually use warm-hot temp water) iI de-tangle my hair with a wide-tooth brush and wash my hair with cold water again :) -
I practically live by my wash daily methods but after recently doing a homemade hair mask I've decided to give up the every day routine. Today's my first day with second day hair, not too bad. (: -
I condition my hair once a week! I pop some olive oil in the micro for about 30 secs and then put on the ends of my hair and my scalp, awesome treatment you guys should really try it! -
Brush/comb gently starting from the bottom then working your way up. This prevents breakage and is easier to brush/comb your hair. -
It is a good idea to find out which hairtype you got. You can do that by seaching on discriptions on hairtypes or ask your hairdresser or maybe a good friend that knows a lot about hair. It is also impotant to check your scalp. Make af separation in your hair and if it is White as your bathroom sink then you can use narmal shampoos. But if your scalp is rosa/red you should go for a shampoo that will help on a sensitive scalp.
My hair hairdresser told me that I have fine hair, that I thought sounded amazing. Since then I found out it just meant that my hair is thin and tends to get tangled and electric very easy. Now I always make sure to buy shampoos and/or conditioners that have "fine hair" signed on it.
Normally I use a shampoo without fragrance so that the fragrance do not touch my scalp. Instead I use fragrance in my (lightweight) conditioner because I want my hair to smell good.
Always comb hair from bottom and way up to the top.
Touching and combing hair too often will prevent hair to get greasy faster.
And remember, hairdressers do not only treat your scalp with a massage to make you feel more confortable, but also because it starts the blood circulation, giving your hair a shine boost like the cold water does. Therefore treat your scalp with a lot of SCALPMASSAGE! You Can also get a conditioner that is meant to get get Down to the roots and treat the scalp, so you don't have to be afraid of your hair getting heavy and boring. -

You can put a lot of leave in conditioner in your hair before entering the pool, so the chlorine can eat up on the leave in conditioner first before the hair. Try wearing a swim cap too:) -
Also remember to rinse out the chlorine in your hair right after you get out of the pool so it doesn't sit in your hair the whole day and try a deep conditioning treatment once a week!

If your hair is very tangled, hold your hair just up to the scalp, and comb the ends. This causes less pain and is better for your scalp. -

Thanks for all of those tips! They are helpful!
A few tips of my own are
-Leave in your conditioner for a few minutes before rinsing.
-Use a light weight shampoo and conditioner.
Thank You Michelle for all that you do and I love your Videos! I hope my tips help! :) -
Dilute shampoo with water and put it in an applicator bottle and apply it directly to the scalp. It makes the shampoo less concentrated and less harsh. Less of your natural oils will be stripped out on your hair which means, less dry. Save money in a long run 'cause diluting it with water consumes less shampoo. I do this daily. Hope this helps. :) -
Those are great tips Michelle! However, I wash my hair everyday to prevent it from getting itchy.-
Maybe it is your shampoo that leaves your scalp itchy :) a girl once told me to not buy the cheapest shampoos on the market, but instead go for truthworthy brands without fragrance. The reason why shampoos may be cheap is because they contain saltwater, which is natural and wouldn't cause skin allergy, and I guess you know the feeling of bathing in the sea without washing the saltwater out leaving the scalp itchy and irritated.

Thank for suggesting a new deep conditioner for me. I'll try it as soon as I get the chance to go buy it.-
Another thing I tried was using sulfate free shampoos because my scalp was dry and full of dandruff causing my hair to get really greasy and no other shampoos seemed to help. Luckily I found one named cutrin bio+-
Something you should try is Authentic African Black Soap. It's amazing. I found it at Whole Foods and I think I'm never going to another brand. http://www.alaffia.com/store/pc/Authentic-African-Black-Soap-16-oz-Peppermint-39p210.htm

Avoid the sun! It damages the hair and skin. If you can not do away with sun exposure, use umbrella or brim hats. -
I have to admitt that i have horrible hair currently, and the only thing i can think off is cause i dye it bright colours (currently purple) because i wash my hair when it turns geasy not before (so every 3rd day) and i dont use cheap shampoos and conditioners after my hair was ruined by certain brand which i will not name. I use a hair mask once a month and a full repair conditioning mask by jon fredia every week. I dont have long enough hair to tie back and only strighten my hair when i have interviews for work or education. While my hair dyer remains lonley in a coner unused. So i am at a bit of a loss as to why my hair is so dry at the ends-
I coloured my hair and permed my hair too. At one point of time, my hair was as damaged as what you described. but i think i finally found my solution. I bought a bottle of argan oil from Redken and i used it on my hair, especially the roots twice daily, before i go to bed and in the morning. I found that my hair condition improves tremendously. Hope this helps.. -
I have the same problem; I trimmed my ends (since you can't actually seal up or fix dead ends) and every day right after swim practice, I use Tresemmé's Split Remedy leave in conditioner. It really helps to prevent spit ends, and I've noticed a huge difference in my hair's health! Both years I trimmed my hair before my swim season, but last year my hair was a wreck and this year I don't have a single split end :) hope it helps

I agree with all of this, however, silk pillow cases are quite pricey. Is there an alternative option at a less expensive cost? Thanks, Michelle! I love what you do. :) -
Switch to sulfate-free shampoos. Sulfate is the detergent that causes shampoos to sud and can ultimately lead to dry, damaged hair and split ends. Sulfate-free shampoos typically don't sud which can be a weird transition growing up in a society where suds = clean, however some sulfate free shampoos have natural surfactants that sud without the damaging effect. Since I've made the transition, I've noticed no breakage and minimal to no shedding when combing and brushing my hair. It's so marvelous! If you consider making the switch, which I highly recommend, consider your hair type, your hair and scalps needs and carefully read the ingredients in the shampoo and how they will ultimately benefit you. -
If you have curly hair, as I do, it is less painful and easier to de-tangle your hair when you put conditioner in (use a comb!) - Personally I believe it to be less damaging for girls/guys because instead of pulling out huge knots of hair when it is dry or tearing up when your pulls at those delicate strands. (It may not be better for you, but when comb my hair when dry (starting from the bottom and working my way up bit by bit) I find I lose more hair than when doing it in the shower with conditioner it. Thanks for the tips though! <3 -

Try using a wooden comb. My hair became shinier and my hair breakage/fall noticeably minimized. Wooden combs are usually available in Chinese beauty stores. Regards Mish! -
