Beauty School: Teen Beauty Basics

Oct 24, 2012 at 4:00am by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

Wearing makeup for the first time as a teenager is a really exciting rite of passage for everyone. I'll never forget the first time I wore eyeliner for the first time at the age of 14. But finding the right makeup can also be a little scary because there are so many different products and brands to choose from. Your best bet is to keep it simple. The most pressing issues for teens are covering up blemishes and slight skin discolorations. You don't want to use lots of product simple to make yourself look older–appreciate your youth now!

Here's my guide to the fix must-have products for teens:

  1. Light colored or sheer eye shadow
  2. Concealer
  3. Clear brow gel
  4. Foundation stick
  5. Tinted lip balm, light pink or sheer lip gloss

Sephora Collection Colorful Mono Eyeshadow in Californian Blonde, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara Clear, Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick, Clinique Long Last Glosswear in Air Kiss

The most important thing to remember is that you don't want to cover your face in too much product. Stick to the basics, and use minimal color. You are absolutely beautiful just as you are without makeup. Even though we all associate wearing it with getting older, remember that wearing too much won't actually make you older.

To my teenage subbies, what skincare or makeup problems do you most want to learn about? Let me know in the comments section!

<3 Mish

Im 19 and I mostly suffer from dark circles from lack of sleep and stress. However when I try to cover them with my concealer I can still see them.

Hey Michelle! I was wondering what is the best makeup routine for sentive skin cuz I have eczema so my skin tends to get really dry. I just started using make up, but everytime I put my make up on for school, it always looks so bad and I end up taking it all off. Thanks Michelle :)

Wel, what I use every morning is sunscreen, a thin layer of primer, bb cream or very lightly tinted moisturiser, cocealer, brow pencil, mascara and if i have time, a little matte brown eye shadow and shadow liner, or maybe some lip gloss. The reason for the brow pencil and mascara is that my lashes and brows are blonde (yikes, right!?) , so i probably wouldnt if it werent for that.

Thanks, I have everything except the foundationstick, but I don't think you need the foundation stick if you don't use liquid foundation. I really want to learn about false lashes

Thanks for helping the poor and the middle class. You are doing an awesome service.

I think that it is a good idea to show us or tell us exactly what brand and the make up you use in your tutorials. Sometimes you do but not always.

Ooh, really want clear brow gel/brow brush. I feel like it would make quite the difference without looking too unnatural. Thanks Michelle!

This is awesome! I have a skincare/makeup routine for everyday, and it hides all acne, dark circles, blemishes, even freckles(which is weird)! I love that you did a post just for teens, so thank you! I would like to know how you would suggest to do makeup for days out with friends. I usually go for a bold eyemakeup look, and softer lips. What do you suggest?

People should wear bolder colors when they're like in college, or older. But that's just me. ;)

Ok all I could find for cheap foundation was liquid foundation, not foundation stick. Rommel is only 3 dollars where I'm from at walmart.
