Hi everyone,
Matte nail polish is a great way to subdue your nail color. For instance, say you want to wear a bright neon color but are concerned that the look is "too much" for your work or school environment. Adding a matte top coat to mattify the texture can actually quiet down the loudness of the color.
It's not a look that's for everyone, but it's great for those who want to have that fun pop of color but don't want anything too crazy. High gloss looks can sometimes draw too much attention or look too flashy, so a matte texture is a great way to add sophistication to any color. It can also make a glitter manicure more age-appropriate. With a variety of matte top coats on the market now (four of which are in the collage at the top), it's an easy effect to add to a manicure if you need to tone it down in a hurry but don't want to lose the polished look of your nails.
What do you think about matte top coats and matte polishes? Are there any colors that you like best for this look?
<3 Mish
P.S. If you've tried any of the top coats in the collage, tell me which one is your favorite in the comments!

I might consider getting a matte top coat to make bright colors appear more natural. Can you do a tutorial? -
I have always loved the thought of this! I do this sometimes, since i own like all of those up there except for the 3rd one. I think that they are really great when you want something cute and fun but not overboard flashy!

Matte nail polish is a lot of fun! There is definitely a difference in the top coat and the polish. The matte polishes don't last a long as a traditional polish with matte top coat applied to it. The Essie matte about you top coat is the best. Followed by the CND matte top coat. A great look to try is Essie's jag-u-are polish, a frosted, bright red, with the matte top coat. I call it "red satin dress". I've been a nail tech for 15+ years, so I've tried a lot of things. Smooches Divas;-)

I haven't tried any of those top coats but I have tried the Revlon Matte Suede polish in Powder Puff. It's beautiful! I kept looking at it my nails cuz I expected them to shine--it's a very unusual effect. I bought it without realizing it was a matte shade but I actually love it now.

Love matte top coats. I've used the essie matte about you. I used it with a light color and it made it look very chalky.

sometimes they look amazing, but sometimes putting a matte top coat on can ruin the manicure..
i just did a NOTD on my blog! http://cloudsandcuticleoil.blogspot.co.uk/

It took some getting used to but I think some matte looks are very nice. Do you have any experience with a black french manicure? I did it once and it was stunning. I used a matte black nail polish (Body by Spa Ritual) and I simply painted the tip with a glossy clear polish. However, after 3 days the matte polish began to take on sheen that took away from the entire look (which is based on the contrast of matte to shiny). I was so disappointed. See look: http://www.pennyspenchant.blogspot.com/2011/11/pennys-lbd-for-nails.html
Do you think a matte top coat would work better? Have you had any experience with the matte top coat looking less matte as time goes on (I assume from hand lotions, hair oils, and other things that touch the nails)? Thx!

i think matte polishes are pretty :) especially if you have sparkles underneath like the photo above :D

I should try this. I am a newbie (for almost 5 years now) in doing my nails and my solution have always been adding a glittery top coat so my lack of expertise wouldn't show as much. I think this is a great way to conceal that unfortunate stuff of mine.

yeah, matte nail polish brings a classy look on your nails. I love matte nail polishes and I'm currently collecting it from Etude. ^_^. It's so hard to find other matte nail polish here in my place aside from buying it online.

Matte About You is awesome, clean finish and dries quickly.
Matte nail polishes also adds an ultra modern touch to your nails; so colours like aqua, lilac, tan, grey, and black all look great with a matte finish.
