Hi everyone,
Each day it's getting a little sunnier and little warmer outside. It's nice to spend this time outdoors, and while it's also nice to get a little Vitamin D for your skin from Mr. Sun, what's not nice are those painful sunburns you're often left with as souvenirs.
Sunburns can be annoying, painful, and peel-y, and once you have one, they tend to be hard to forget about until they fade away. Your skin needs a little TLC when it's burned. Here are some of my sunburn soothing tips to help out when your golden glow is more of rosy red...
- Wear loose clothing. Your skin is trying to breathe and heal when it's burned, and your layers of skin need to be able to peel and rejuvenate with ease. Wearing constrictive clothing is both uncomfortable and counter-productive to the healing process.
- Drink tons of water. You need to hydrate extra well to compensate for the dryness in your skin.
- Aloe, aloe, aloe. Aloe is your best friend when you're burned! It's a super soother that you can apply for both instant and long-term burn relief.
There are a lot of different ways that people like to use aloe. You can use it alone or blended with other beneficial ingredients. Click here for a cool idea (literally!) that involves the freezing of aloe in ice cube trays, and below is a DIY soothing concoction that uses some coconut oil!
Ingredients:
- 3-4 in piece off an aloe vera plant, sliced in half
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil, in liquid form
- 1/2 – 1 tsp raw honey or propolis
Directions:
- Apply the three ingredients as separate layers; first, apply the aloe. Next, apply the coconut oil, and finally, apply the honey or propolis.
- Wear the mixture to bed and wake up to much happier skin!
Think of your burn as your skin asking--or yelling at--you to please wear more sunscreen and be more careful with your time spent catching rays!
Do you burn easily?

I burn so easily, that I have to wear a t-shirt all day no matter what at the beach. I look like such a freak. :| -
Great tip! I burn so easily! Another tip for you sun burnt girls; cucumber! If you have the time; lay down and cover the sun burnt skin with long slices of cucumber, it cools and makes it recover faster. Don't have a cucumber right now? A cold wet towel can do the cooling trick too, but if you have cucumber; try it, it feels great! Though
I do recommend taking a (cold-ish) shower afterwards; unless you love to smell like a cucumber of course :P -
I went to an island recently with friends and I got burnt majorly! I completely forgot to reapply sunblock after we went in the ocean for a dip! Thanks for the DIY Michelle!

When I got burns from the sun my grandmother made a mix of egg and cream and applied on my skin. It was painful at first but in a few hours the burn is almost healed.

I don't usually burn very easily, unless I don't bring sunscreen with me when I don't have proper sun protection. I try to prevent sunburns from occuring, but sometimes especially during the warm months when I walk home from school, it's pretty easy to get sunburnt.

The great thing about that remedy is that you can actually find these things more easily nowadays thanks to stores like trader joes. My neighbor actually has a giant aloe plant growing in her backyard and when her girls get sunburns they literally just snip a couple of inches off a leaf and squeeze out the aloe. It really works! She says she never buys the bottled stuff because the plant works just as well. She's even offered to let me take snips if I ever need! Natural solutions really do work very nicely!

The only thing i have to say is that tea tree oil is just as good as Aloe. I'm personally allergic to all forms of Aloe so it doesn't work for me when people tell me to use it. You should really look at alternitives for those of us who value your suggestions but can't use just that one thing.

I've had some really bad sunburns. But one of the weirdest remidies I have had done on a sunburn is Apple cider vingar. It sounds like it would hurt to put on a sunburn but it puts the acids back in your skin that the sun takes out when you get a sunburn. And most people have vingar in their house unlike an aloe plant and coconut oil.

I don't usually burn easily, but last week I got the worst sunburn of my life. There was a sand art festival at my college, and I was bent over working on a sculpture in the hot sun for 5 hours...I put on sunscreen, but it didn't seem to do anything!
My whoooole back is peeling now. I look like a leper!
And the rim of my left ear actually blistered. Seriously kids, REAPPLY sunscreen! Don't just put it on once!!! And remember that your ears need sunscreen too. The whole rim of my ear is one big scab. Not attractive, nor does it feel good D:

I tend to burn somewhere in the medium level but the one thing is, my sunburns go away in a day or two so if i get a bad sunburn it usually ends up in an uneven tan afterwards talk about embarassing.. Also i use the aloe when i have a bad sunburn :)

Love aloe, but prevention is key!I wear a TON of sunblock. Also important to know the difference between SPF and PA protection! xo
