Hi everyone,
A reader named Anastasia recently asked me the following question: "I'm from Singapore which is pretty hot, so how can I keep my eyeliner from smudging? I don't want to look like a panda!"
Eyeliner that won't stay put over time--whether we're talking over the course of the day or just a few short hours--is a common makeup mishap. This usually happens as the result of long wear time, using the wrong products, or being in hot & humid environments. Since we all encounter this problem every once in a while, I thought it would be helpful to share my answer along with some of my favorite tips for keeping your liner in place.

To prevent smudging, smearing, streaking, and running, try the following:
- Before you apply your liner, first apply a primer.
- Opt for a liquid liner. Liquid liner usually stays on longer and won't smudge and slide as much as a pencil.
- If you love a good pencil, I strongly suggest doing step 1 and waiting for the primer to set before applying.
- Use waterproof liner, not oil-based.
- Use a fixative spray to help set the makeup once complete.
Being such an eyeliner lover, I find these tricks are often KEY! I hope this helps. :D
What other eyeliner issues would you guys like solutions for?
Kisses from Italy!!

So would an oil based eyeliner pencil be good for lining the under part of your eyelid? tight lining I think it's called.

I love using a gel liner. ELF or Maybeline for drugstore or Bobbie Brown for department store bands. I find that they stay put no matter what. You may want to set the gel line with a eyeshadow just for insurance.
-
also another solution is to use liquid eye liner but like a marker... for example this eyeliner that michelle and promise use all the time by Lancome:)
they are so goood..you have the best control;) -
Hey! well im only using mascera right now but whenever i do try to apply any liner i look sooo bad! how r u so good at it?
-
I fail at this. I got the thin line down, went to the other eye... SMEAR!
Had to redo my awesome attempt to experiment with eye shadows...

Hello Michelle thanks for the tip.....I agreed with Mi Chu's idea--> " to cover a light coat of powder on your eyes" I used to practice this....& sometimes I like to use black color eye shadow as my eyeliner...it didn't smudge & it stays longer....:) But I still in learning process on using gel eye liner:)

I recommend you to use Gel Eyeliner instead of pencil liner. They pretty look the same, but Gel eyeliner doesn't smudge (try to find a good product)
And if you still prefer pencil liner, my advice is to cover a light coat of powder on your eyes. It works !

I watched your old eyeliner video and I tried doing like little strokes and it did not work for me! Any other ways to get a thin straight line?

Best/safest for the waterline? A lady I know had cancer in her eye (weird, huh?) and the surgery was pretty serious. It took a coulple of years for her eye to look 'normal'. Her doctor said not to use drugstore eye makeup as it was more likely to have lower quality control.
What do you think? I mean, ladies have been using kohl for centuries to protect their eyes. Are there certain eyeliners that are best - especially for the waterline? I know you can't give medical advice - but just in general - what do you think?
Thanks - DeB
p.s. your suggestion to use extra virgin olive oil as a make up remover is awesome. and the brush cleaning trick with olive oil and dawn worked better and faster than any of the brush cleaners I have..............

What I usually do is :
1) Apply a primer (Urban Decay Primer Potion is great!)
2) Draw a line with my black eyeliner pencil (the product says 'waterproof', but since I live in Malaysia with hot weather, it doesn't really work well...
3) To solve this problem, I will put on a dark colour eyeshadow (powder form) right on top of the pencil line. It helps to fix the first line which is usually not as smooth. It also reduces the chances of smudging or smearing!
4) If I want a more dramatic or shaper look (and if I have enough time of course), I will use my black liquid liner on top. I find it much easier to handle the liquid liner at this stage because I already have a clear line to follow.
5) Lastly, I will use a light colour eyeshadow to line my lower lids! It helps to brighten up my eyes and prevents my eyeliner from smudging too! Oh~ And make sure to apply primer for lower lids as well~
It seems like a lot to do to make sure the eyeliner stays put especially in this HOT and HUMID weather.... XP
