Beauty School: Make Your Lipcolor Last

Feb 25, 2013 at 4:00am by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

I love a great lipcolor as much as the next girl, but reapplying every thirty minutes… not so much. Long-wear lipsticks can only do so much, and long-wear formulas tend to be drying. In order to extend the life of your lipcolor and lock it place in all night long, provisions must be made. Follow these steps and kiss reapplying goodbye.

pzV9HvIjliSco0PAnKFESv8Q.jpeg:Amazon:photo

  1. Scrub – the key to an even and lasting lipstick application is a good base. Lipstick won’t stick to dry, flakey lips. Exfoliate with a gentle scrub to remove any dry skin. Keep reading for an easy DIY lip scrub!
  2. Prep – now that your lips are smooth and soft, seal it in with lip balm. Allow the lip balm to sink in for a few minutes before moving on to the next step. I usually do this first, apply my makeup, and then finish with lipcolor.
  3. Fill – line and fill in your lips with a lip liner that matches your natural lipcolor. This creates a base for the lipstick to cling to and using lip liner close to your natural color prevents visible contrast between your liner shade and your lipstick shade.
  4. Apply – apply, blot, repeat. In a pinch, just doing this step will help extend the life of your lipstick. Apply a coat of lipstick, blot with a tissue and apply once more.
  5. Seal – set the color in place with a light dusting a translucent powder and you’re out the door (feel free to leave the lipstick behind)!

And now for that DIY Lip Scrub I promised…

Mowa4pWu2n0Phd0Xev6VCuc3.jpeg:Amazon:photo

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (granulated sugar will work too, but brown sugar is gentler)
  • 2 Tablespoons honey (olive oil will work too, but honey is naturally more hydrating)

Instructions:

  1. Mix the ingredients together and gently rub it on your lips in circular motions.
  2. Rinse it off with a wet washcloth and warm water. Pat dry. And finish with lip balm.
  3. Save the leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it again.

My technique isn't DIY but it works great for me. Before bed I apply a generous coat of Burt's Bees lip balm (the original, not any special flavors or tints). The next morning, wet your lips and your finger with warm or lukewarm water and gently rub back and forth. The old lip balm, granted you haven't drooled it all off in your sleep, will rub off along with the old layer of skin. Practically brand new lips!

I make my lip scrub out of coconut oil and sugar. It's relatively solid when it cools, and I just rub it on like chapstick. It also tastes delicious.

If you don't have honey or olive oil at home, you can use a soft toothbrush to exfoliate your lips, just make sure your lips are a bit damp or use lipbalm before. Then you just rinse a bit and apply lipbalm.
I think it works great =)

Toothbrush can leave your lips a little tender sometimes. I find the best thing is a clean damp handtowel or facecloth. Thats what i use on my face too with the towel i use to dry my hair i then use to gently scrub my face and lips. squeeky clean! :)

You can also generously apply vaseline to your lips, let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently scrub your lips in a circular motion, wipe off with a warm wet towelette :)

Always works for me! Def less harsh to your lips with the toothbrush alone.

one thing that works for me is putting Vaseline on my lips and then deeply massaging brown sugar and salt on my lips. the i add another layer of Vaseline on a rub my lips together. i normally do this before be and then in the morning, use Vaseline for your lips and then add your lipstick. works like a charm!

I know what you mean with the lip stain, but try putting a little bit of lip balm on before it..that way it'll hydrate your lips, & stay on longer.

Honestly, I used Colorgirl lipstick for the first time, and it lasted all day! It was even better than the clinique and lancome lipsticks I've used before!

Oh wow, this couldn't have come at a better time! I'm attending a cosplay convention in a few days and I've been wondering how I'm going to get my lip color to last. I was looking around for a long lasting lip stick but I can't find the shade I want. Now I can just use the one I have~ Thanks a lot for this, Michelle!

PS: I'm cosplaying Sailor Moon <3 Had a look at your tutorial too!~

I don't know if you can get it in the USA, but I swear by Lipcote http://lipcote.com/home/ (the website also has a very cool lipstick finder) it's a quick-drying topcoat that instantly seals lipstick in, I guess the ultimate hold would be making Lipcote application step 6 of your regimen.

I once had a lipgloss that was as intense as a lipstick and you wouldn´t get it off even if you scrubbed it, drank, ate, ...anything. I think it was by Oriflame, but they don´t seem to sell it anymore. Too bad, it was really good. Then again, gods know how they managed to make it so durable :-)

After applying the lip balm and letting that absorb into your lips a bit I would apply a lip primer before applying the lip liner. TooFaced and Urban Decay both have very nice lip primers.

Great great tips! My secret to smooth radiant lips is to apply lip balm before any lip product you use, including lip-gloss! This allows you lip product to glide on more smoothly and will last longer :)
