Beauty School: Makeup Primer

Oct 16, 2012 at 8:00am by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

Makeup primers are a very useful but often ignored product that can make a world of difference for your face. Primer is the ultimate makeup multi-tasker; it controls oil production, fills in fine lines and wrinkles, provides an extra layer for the pigment in the rest of your face makeup to adhere to, and acts as an invisible buffer between your skin and the elements. Not only will the color of your foundation or tinted moisturizer look better, but it will also last longer throughout the day.

Primer is applied after sunscreen and moisturizer and before any foundation or tinted moisturizer. I love wearing primer if I don't feel like wearing a ton of makeup but need a little bit of coverage–just throw on a little bit of pressed powder, and you'll still look glowing and radiant!

Do you use a makeup primer? Tell me how it works for you in the comments section!

<3 Mish

Should teens wear primer? I am just so confused, and I just want to know what I'm doing and know that I'm doing it right. :(

I do use primer which is dr.feelgood from BeneFit, but I donot feel in that way too much. It said that dr. feelgood could be invisible on pores and stay long of makeup, however I felt it is too oily after morning time and I have no place to wash away in the lunch time. It puzzles me a lot. Any suggestions Michelle?

I do if I need my makeup to stay on for an extended period of time - otherwise I try not to overload with product.

I use BB cream as a primer :) essentially I've never worn foundation, primer, bb creams because one: I didn't know how to find the right shade and two: I always felt it looked heavy. Now that I'm older, using just bb cream then mineral foundation for special occasions make it just right. I live in Utah so it's going to be different for everybody, my suggestion to youngins is just use lotion and syrums to keep your face hydrated. Once you get older, you won't regret it because it's a hard habit to get into once you're getting in your twenties. I have the hardest time getting in the habit of hydrating my face. Also because my skin is incredibly sensitive so find a product that's going to work for you. Good luck ladies and thanks Mish for this awesome post :)

I had a make up artist do my make up last week and she's the first person to tell me that Primers are just a marketing scheme and that we don't need it. She said that might be the reason I'm breaking out all the time. I've been using Smashbox's photo finish primer and she said that is the worst. I like how it makes my skin feel smooth and was great for keeping my make up in place in the summer heat but I'm taking a break from it to see if I stop breaking out. Any advice Michelle?

I use Arbonne's Makeup Primer. It's fantastic. I sell it, so I get it if no one wants to take my word for it, but do yourselves a favor and find a consultant who will give you a sample! It's so nice, like spreading silk on your face :)

I just use it on the places I need it (like my chin has acne scarring) and blend it out. I find I get a more natural look that way :)

Hahahaha I use monistate chaffing gel - same ingerdient in the monistate as their is in the primers - all silicone based....Yup and it cost a ton less money and last a long time...I did however watch another guru on youtube and he said and which I tend to agree with...he said that you can't really mix oil and water and expect a lasting stay when it comes to your foundations and primers...If you use a water based foundation then you should also use a water based primer and vice versa oil with oil and water with water..makes a ton of sense....just sayin'

I use Maybelline's "Dream Smooth Primer". It works perfect for me. When I've moisturized my skin I use it. It really smooths out all my fine lines and makes my skin matte. After my primer I use my concealer and foundation, then I powder to set. My makeup lasts all day. I love my primer :)

I use the Covergirl Simply Ageless Serum Primer. Not only does it act as a primer, it also gives my skin some youthful benefits for the long run. I only need half a pump for my whole face.

I use those airbrush primers - you can use a drop or two for your whole face (without using an airbrush machine) and they work just as well as other primers, but the product lasts way longer :D
