Beauty School: Three Easy Yet Unexpected Uses of Olive Oil

Sep 26, 2012 at 6:00am by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

By now, you probably all know that olive oil is one of my favorite beauty products. Whether you're looking for a DIY, a natural makeup remover or a homemade bath scrub, this Mediterranean staple has a wide array of practical uses.

One of the easiest ways to reap the benefits of olive oil is to use it for its moisturizing capabilities. It contains linoleic acid, which is a compound that prevents water from evaporating. Since the human body doesn't produce this acid on its own, it's a great way to moisturize.

Here are three ways to incorporate olive oil into your beauty and skincare regime:

Hair detangler – Simply work a small amount of olive oil through wet hair to get rids of tangles and knots. The goal is to cover all of your hair in a thin layer of the oil so that you can then use your fingers to work through the trouble spots.

Shower oil – This is a great way to moisturize in the shower or bath while your skin is still wet. After washing and rinsing your body, massage olive oil into your skin as an instant moisturizer. If desired, you may also add a few drops of essential oils to give the oil the scent of your choice. You'll get out of the shower feeling silky smooth with a subtle, satiny sheen over your skin.

Acne Solution – Although it sounds counter-intuitive, some people swear that using olive oil on areas affected by acne is an effective solution. Using three tablespoons of olive oil and four tablespoons of salt, mix the ingredients together into a paste. Then use your fingers to massage it over your face and rinse with warm water.

Will you incorporate olive oil into your beauty routine? Post your own uses of the product in the comments section below!

I use it as a make up remove all of the way! Its gentle and moisturizing around the delicate eye area. I use it with raw sugar to exfoliate my elbows with a bit of honey as well. Extra virgin olive oil is very versatile!

I mix about a table spoon of coffee grounds (which I get from a coffee shop for free) and a teaspoon of olive oil. The mixture is perfect to scrub off toe callouses.

      Hi there!

My grandma advised to use olive oil years ago as her and her sisters used to use it! I used extra virgin olive oil as a make up remover for over two years and I would say is a fantastic way to leave skin clean and soft, but in my case I started getting spots quite often (and I suffer of EXTREMELY dry skin) so I stopped.

A few months ago my mum (best beauty expert I have ever met) found a shop specializing in olive oil and olive oil cosmetics, www.thespanisholiveshop.co.uk . She got a make up remover and an olive water tonic. Results are just AMAZING. Skin feels super clean, not oily at all and super silky. The make up remover contains olive oil, but also other natural products which makes it even better than just olive oil. The tonic leaves a fresh feeling with a lovely scent. And the best of all...no oily sensation and no spots at all!!!! I am waiting now for a body cream and an organic cellulite oil from the same store!! can't wait to try them :)

I highly recommend this kind of product, unbeatable results and also at a very good price!

      Has anyone tried this out??

The Olive Oil for Acne is just amazing! I didn't have salt so I just used sugar and it had the same effect! I love when you rub it into your skin and you feel a tingly sensation!

I use olive oil for many many things:

-Main cooking oil (traditional in my country)

      -Hair detangler

      -Body Lotion

-Add a couple of drops into drying mascara to get it back into brand new condition

      -Face and hair masks

      -Nail treatments

      -Make-up remover

      -To clean make-up brushes

      -For dry elbows and knees

      -For skin exfoliation

      -Foot softner

-Shaving (instead of shaving cream, leaves the skin smooth and gives a great close shave with no bumps or cuts)

      -Etc

I already use Olive oil, as a Nail Hardening Treatment.
I mix one teaspoon of olive oil and 5 drops of Lemon essential Oil, and then rub it on my nails (and hands too, when skin is very dry) once a week. Nails grow up really healty and hard, and is also a way to soften cuticles before removing them.

I had very weak nails, always breaking, but now they are just fine!

If you shave, you can use olive oil mixed with some shower gel and use it as a shave cream. It works much better and your skin doesn't get dry.

I use olive oil (heated) onto my hair almost every weekend, and the results are just amazing! My hair is partially damaged from a whole week, but after the deep conditioning, my tresses are like, brand new! My hair color even gets darker, and my highlights are wonderfully conditioned. Weekly oiling of the hair even slows down the graying process!
