Skincare Spotlight: Let Your Skin Breathe

Oct 18, 2012 at 4:00am by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

I was reading through the forum, and I noticed that lots of you have hit a roadblock of sorts when it comes to the acne products you're using. We've all been there–buying eight different face washes, creams, ointments, spot treatments, toners, and facemasks at once, testing them, choosing one, switching to another, and then switching to yet another... It's a painfully frustrating process, and what you might not realize is that it could be making your skin worse. Sometimes it helps the skin to take a break from all of the crazy regimes and to stick to something simple and gentle for a while.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, Simple Skincare Refreshing Facial Wash Gel, La Roche-Posay Physiological Cleansing Gel, philosophy Purity Made Simple

Skip all the drugstore products with long lists of ingredients, and choose the gentlest, cleanest, simplest face wash you can find. For the time being, stop looking for cleansers that specifically target acne, and look for products that just cleanse the skin.

This won't necessarily work for everyone, but it's worth seeing whether your skin improves from giving it a break and just letting it breathe. Although oil on your face feels like your worst enemy, they're crucial for keeping your skin moisturized. Too much benzyl peroxide and salicylic acid can actually make your skin so dry that dead skin cells block the pores, which will just make you break out more. And even if you don't have trouble with acne, dermatologists recommend that you take one day each week where you don't use any product on your face. It's all about letting your skin breathe!

Have any of you taken a skincare break? Share your stories in the comments section!

Guys I really want to share with you what is helping my skin at the moment. I've tried so many products to help my skin to clear out of acne (I don't have severe acne though but a bit of acne and imperfections everywhere).. Omg, I mean I tried litteraly everything by Estee Lauder, Clinique 3 steps, Ducray(french brand, I live in France), Cetaphil, Bioderma I won't do the whole list, really a lot of things and THANK GOD I think I found miracle products, I mean real miracle products, the ones you think you are never going to find out. Maybe you've heard about it, it's the acne regimen of acne.org, yeah I know the website name does not inspire trust, well it didn't for me but after seeing lots of photos and videos I decided to try it, I gave a shot to a lot of other products, why not those ones? One of the best things I did so far, I've just used these products for 2 weeks now, I can already see A LOT of difference, I have huge hope for my skin to become perfect (even with the acne scars, I'm going to treat them with the Bio Oil, this one is another great one!!) So guys, just go and check it out, look for reviews on google, or videos on youtube, that's where I found about it, I have to thank the girl who talked about it by the way. I'm so happy to see this is something really working for me now, I really mean it, go check it out, if you follow the steps, you'll be beyond amazed by the results. If you don't believe me, just try it out yourself and if you're not satisfied with the results, I think they do some kinf of payback or I don't know.. since I'm not going to send these back eveeeer ^^. I hope I've helped you, it did for me, I mean it, lifesavers =)

Thanks Michelle! This is such true advice, I'm not exactly sure what ANNE was talking about there, going on a rampage of non sense that you never mentioned in this post whatsoever, but I have definitely found that once I switched to a natural cleanser that's sole purpose was just cleaning my skin of impurities that there was a dramatic difference. Thanks!

      Dear Michelle,

I really like you as an youtuber and I honestly respect you as a person and make-up artist. I have learned a lot when it comes to applying make-up and how to compliment a face with make-up.

BUT when it comes to skin-care: you have A LOT to LEARN. You don't need a serum, you don't need a mask and you definitly don't need a eye-cream.

It is important that you use products without fragrance, esssential oils like lavender, cinnamon ect., alcohol (accept some ''fatty alcohols, so every alcohol on a ingredient list with a name before alcohol) and it is important for product to be in a pump: in jar packaging every antioxident in a product is gone within days.

There a 5 ''essential'' skincare products you can use daily:

      - a facewash

      - a toner (without alcohol ofcourse and filled with anti-oxidents)

      - a BHA or AHA exfoliant (for these count: TAKE IT SLOW, if you never used these you really have to make your skin used to them or else it can lead to break-outs)

      - a moisturizer

      - a sunscreen

A moistuzier can also be used under the eyes, if you feel like it need more moisture: you can just buy a more rich face cream.(and save yourself money with it).

This skincare regime is based on actual facts when it comes to skincare.
Serums are nice but definitly not a must. Same goes for masks. Benzoylperoxide is pretty aggrasive so first try a BHA exfoliant (or salicyl acid exfoliant, depends on what you want to call it) but not higher then 2%. If you have more dry skin a AHA is better for you.

I hope to get to you Michelle. You you adapt your skincare regime to this you can influence a lot of girls that use the wrong products that are actually destroying their healthy skin.

I use Angels on Bear Skin. It's essentially Kaolin, lavender oil, and chamomile blue oil. It's wonderful! Especially since being pregnant really makes you sensitive to everything.

I love using Philosphy Purity. I've had it since February and I still have another inch or so to go. It leaves my skin feeling clean. That paired with the Clarisonic was a lifesaver for my acne!

I use Cetaphil alternating with some shower gel for baby. My dermatologist recommended me to use shower gel / soap bar that is used by baby to be used on the face. He said even a baby's skin is so sensitive, of course you can use it on your face. No problem! Suprisingly, it works!

During the summer I have to wash 1 to 2 times a day. But the second the temp gets beneath 100, I only wash when in the shower, not every morning and night. I noticed my skin is better that way!

I use Clinique's Gel Facial Cleanser for Oily Skin.

I must admit, I had problems with acne through high school and tried just about everything I could. Then one day my stepmom took me to see a dermatologist and she reccomended the Dove soap bar along with a daily face moistrizure with spf, and it worked (still does). It's amazing how something so simple works such magic.

I take a skincare break once a week, and more often if I don't have time for it xD Every week on saturda, after my hockeymatch, I don.t use skin products. I guess I kind of 'sweat' my pores open and all the dirt is gone! (sounds kind of nasty, but all the make up and stuff is gone gone gone!). When I do use products, most of the time it's VICHY Normaderm. Quite expensive stuff, but works really well for me since my skin is both dry and sensitive, and as for scrub: essence Pure Skin & essence My skin products ^^

I personally use the sugar and olive oil scrub that was mentioned in another post from Michelle and I tell ya that stuff works wonders on my skin....I actually stopped using it for a week or two and I noticed that my skin was not as healthy and glowing so I went back to the scrub and it sure does work miracles...oh and it is less expensive then any other scrub I have ever used.
