New Tutorial: Broken City Makeup

Jan 18, 2013 at 4:00am by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

Today I am recreating the sophisticated look of Catherine Zeta-Jones’ character, Cathleen Hostetler, from the new movie Broken City. As the wife of a politician, Cathleen Hostetler must look put together at all times. This look is simple enough for daytime wear and glamorous enough for evening out on the town. Watch my tutorial to find out how to create Cathleen Hostetler’s understated elegance:

To complete the look, you’re going to need some big, voluminous curls.

Look at that volume! Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Start with your favorite volumizing shampoo and conditioner. But don’t go overboard on the conditioner – just use a little on the ends.
  2. While hair is still damp work in a golf ball-size amount of thickening mousse, from root to tip.
  3. After blow-drying, lift the hair at the crown of your head and spray root lifter, focusing on the hair closest to the scalp.
  4. Add curls using a large barrel curling iron, at least 1-1/2 inches.
  5. And finally, Lock your big volume curls in place with your favorite hairspray.

Will you try Cathleen Hostetler’s look? Let me know in the comments sections!

<3 Mish

Hi Michelle! Thanks for the great video. Would you know which nude lipstick shades would suit me? I've light brown skin and Revlon's 070 medium deep mineral foundation or Max Factor's compact foundation in 05 Sand are close to my complexion.

Hi Michelle. This look is classically beautiful. I totally love it. Also I have a question for you. My eyelids are not even. I use makeup glue to even out my eyelids. However i find it very hard to put on eyeshadow after i use glue to enhance my eyelids. The eyeshadow got very messy even when the glue is completely dry. Do you have any advice?

I love the video the make up look so elegant but can you possibly do a make up tutorial for ladies with small asian eyes like mine? I really had difficult time putting eye shadow because of the size of my eyes.. i dont have wide beautiful eyes like yours.. if i put eye shadow, i will just look like a man with make up..

@Natasha a large barrel curling iron is great for big, soft romantic curls. Let me know if you give it a try!
