NEW TUTORIAL: How to Stud it Up

Nov 7, 2012 at 12:00pm by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

Does anything convey a "devil may care" attitude like studded clothing? I love adding studs to my clothes myself and infusing my wardrobe with a hint of punk! It's a very easy fashion DIY, and this is a great opportunity to channel your inner rebel while maintaining the style status quo. Check out my new tutorial to learn how to add studs yourself:

To stud it up, all you'll need is an article of clothing, a seam ripper, and studs. Let yourself go and get creative when picking out what you want to stud. I think sweaters, T-shirts, jean jackets, jeans, collared shirts, bags, and sneakers are great options. Most craft stores, such as Joann's and Michaels, sell both studs and seam rippers in-store. Studs are also available online at places like Studs & Spikes where they have a wide range of products to choose from.

Here are some of my favorite studs available, whether you're looking for something simple or ornate:

Once you have all of your supplies in order, you'll be ready to get studding! It helps to have the design in mind before you start. Figure out how big you want the studded area to be, whether you want it to have a pattern, or if you want it to be a bit of a free-for-all.

Here are my step-by-step instructions that will have you gleaming with attitude and edge in no time:

  1. Using a seam ripper, poke a small hole where you want to place your first stud. You don't want it to be too big because the stud should fit nice and snugly here.
  2. Insert the bottom part of the stud and then screw the top on. Make sure it's secured tightly so that it doesn't fall off.
  3. Keep adding studs until the rebel in you is satisfied! Remember, with each stud you put on, the more badass you become.

Get ready to be the most stylish rebel around! What I love about this fashion DIY is that you get to infuse your personality into your clothes yourself. Talk about clothing being a personal statement!

What do you think of studding up your clothing? Let me know in the comments section!
