Quick Tip: Stop Your Eye Makeup From Running

Nov 8, 2012 at 4:00am by Michelle Phan

Hi everyone,

There's nothing worse than stepping out the door in the morning right after applying your makeup just to have your eye makeup start running. Luckily, there are a few ways to get rid of this common beauty problem.

One option is to take a flat-headed eye shadow brush and use it to apply pressed powder right up to the edge of your eyeliner or lash line. Lightly press down and then sweep the powder across. The powder will absorb any excess oil or moisture, so it sets your eye makeup in place. Another option is to use an eye makeup primer, which will give your eyeliner and eye shadow an extra layer to adhere to, just like your tinted moisturizer or foundation with makeup primer. But if you find your makeup still watering, then you might want to consider switching to waterproof products.

What do you do to stop your eye makeup from running? Share your tips in the comments section!

After i applied primer to my eyes i have to set it with powder, if i only put on my eye makeup after that, it will smear and be all over the place!

I never had problems with the liquid eye liner.
Indeed with the classic pencil eye liner I have problems, It becomes smudgy and comes off after some time. D' ugh!
      A tip I was looking for. :D

Oh, and I had another question for you Michelle: what is a good water proof drugstore eyeliner? I usually go to Walmart, and I saw maybeline new York unstoppable eyeliner. Is that good? Please respond! :)

I use maybeline new York great lash waterproof mascara, and after I wash my face in the morning I use tinted moisturizer to add a bit more coverage, and it acts as a primer!!! Wow. I'm only 13 and I know way too much about makeup; In a good way!!!!! ;)

the trick I use to make sure my waterline eyeliner doesn't run is I take a q-tip and wipe it dry first and then put the eyeliner and it stays put and doesn't run or make my eye water

I try not to have ANYTHING around the outer corner of my eyes. It's one of the oiliest parts of my face, and everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, runs around there. I mostly use powder eyeshadows or a thin line of liquid liner because nothing else stays for me. My skin is WAY too oily for anything else.

I recommend using eyeshadow base - ArtDeco have a very good one. It makes eyeshadows (and liners too) waterproof and also adds intensity to colors. Definitelly worth buying. :)

Get some sleep, my eyes always water when I haven't slept enough. Also, check if your mascara doesn't need changing. My eyes just wouldn't stop watering and then I realized my mascara was over a year old. I bought new ones and now it's much better, still need more sleep though. ^^'

Deborah Mercer- I'm the same way!! :(

      I have used or tried:

      - Waterproof pencil eyeliner

      - Gel eyeliner

      - Setting with translucent powder and mattifying surrounding area

      - Setting with black eyeshadow

Everything STILL runs! It only runs a little less now that I'm using waterproof.. but not much less. Why? :(
