Sometimes, after a long, tough week at work, a fun girls’ night out is just what I need to unwind. Last week, the girls and I decided to meet up for dinner at Vintage Café in the middle of uptown Whittier, a quaint neighborhood in an old, historic city boasting an array of eclectic businesses, popular restaurants, coffee shops, and specialty shops.
We like places that are happening without being overcrowded, bustling but not too noisy, classy but still relaxed. We want to enjoy our food and feel comfortable as we catch up on each other’s lives or recount funny stories from the week. Not every place meets these criteria, so we’re always thrilled when we find a great restaurant.
Vintage Café is a modern French eatery obscured by its hole-in-the-wall entrance, pleasantly spacious despite the long, slightly narrow layout. The hostess seated us at a table – towards the back, where we had plenty of room in a corner all to ourselves – with white tablecloths, gently lit chandeliers, and no dress code. Just our kind of place.
We started off with steamed mussels in a buttery, garlicky white wine sauce, which we mopped up with bread and basil French fries when we ran out of mussels. We followed that with a tender, moist roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and grilled vegetables, and a juicy rib eye steak topped with a savory, red wine gravy alongside crispy green beans. We always order a variety that we can split and share.

The girls and I also couldn’t resist ordering a decadent bowl of mushroom truffle mac and cheese, and trying Vintage Café’s signature Mango Chili Martini, a sweet cocktail sprinkled with spicy cayenne pepper, their Blood Orange Margarita, and their elderflower-infused St. Gin Martini. We finished our evening out with an ice cream-laden molten chocolate cake, the perfect ending to a great night out.
