Skincare Spotlight: The Oil Cleansing Method

Hi everyone,

Have you guys heard of the Oil Cleansing Method? It’s an all-natural skincare method that uses natural oils to help you achieve naturally clear and beautiful skin. At first, it may seem a little counterintuitive – after all, the words “oil” and “skin” aren’t usually used together to signify a good thing.  However, not all oil is created equal (just look at my posts about the amazing benefits of tea tree and jojoba oils!) and according to this method, some oils can actually change your skin for the better.

The Oil Cleansing Method is free of fragrances (which often irritate skin) and is based on the belief that your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. According to the website, the oil you put on your skin will dissolve the dirty oil already in it, leaving you with clear, fresh skin.  The crazy part is that some people say they can actually feel gritty little beads coming out of their pores as they massage the oil into their skin!! To use this method, you combine a dab of castor oil with olive, tea tree, or sunflower seed oil—there are some suggestions on this website.

However, there’s a reason why this method is slightly controversial – other people complain that it leaves their skin red, raw and extremely irritated. This is one review that explains the not-so-pretty effects of the treatment.

Nevertheless, I’ve heard this method is very popular in Asia; women there say it’s the best way to get rid of makeup!

I use Dermalogica’s Precleanse, it’s a blend of olive and apricot oils (it smells wonderful!) and it’s excellent to use for getting your makeup off, or if you just need a quick refresher.

What facial products do you use on days when you’re not doing OCM? E.g. makeup remover, moisturizer, and face wash. Thanks!
