Style Guide: Street-Friendly Runway Trends

Hi everyone,

One of the fundamental debates in the fashion world is whether the trends we see on the runway translate to the real world. On the one hand, fashion and makeup can both be considered art forms. Creating wild and innovative runway looks is a part of the creative process. But the flip side is that clothes and makeup are two things that we encounter on a daily basis. Some runway trends are clearly meant to stay on the runway, but don’t let that stop you from seeking out trends that you can tweak for your daily beauty and style looks.

Here are some of my favorite runway trends that I think look awesome on the street as well:

Don’t let the intensity of this nail trend deter you. The almost black nail is wearable because it has the drama of true black nail polish but is undeniably more elegant. These jewel tones will make you feel like you’re wearing ten beautiful gems on your hands. Having to take a closer look to see the true color makes the almost black nail a subtle yet effective “statement piece” for any outfit. Look for very dark and deep blues, plums, reds, and greens.

You don’t necessarily need to do as extreme of a part as some of the designers did on the runway for fall 2012. Part your hair just slightly further over to the side than you usually do. This will have a double-take effect as opposed to a “stop and stare” one. Think of extreme parts as an easy way to upgrade any hairstyle. This trend can be used to spice up a ponytail, braid, half-up half-down look, or hair that’s worn down.

Not all of us are blessed with model-perfect skin. But there is something to be said for the “no makeup makeup” on an aesthetic level—it’s a natural, soft, and striking all at the same time. There’s nothing wrong with using makeup to give the impression you’re not wearing any. That’s the beauty of cosmetics. The no makeup look works well for any casual daytime outing, but I think it looks very glamorous with a fancier outfit. It also gives off an undeniable vibe of confidence. And, as well all know, confidence is the key to beauty.

Incorporate one of the trends into your look and take a photo! Upload the photo to your profile and post a link in the comments section for a chance to be featured as the Member of the Moment!
