These days, many of us spend a good portion of our time staring at screens (computer, TV, phone, etc.), which, if you’re not careful, can take a serious toll on your eyes. Straining your eyes can overwork the blood vessels in the sensitive skin underneath the eyes, causing them to look darker and purpler, a.k.a. zombie eyes!

To decrease your chances of developing dark circles, make an effort to take a 15-minute break for every hour you spend on the computer (that goes for gaming too!). You could walk around, or simply stop what you’re doing to enjoy some tea or a glass of water. No matter what you decide to do, committing to a 15-minute break for the sake of your precious peepers can make a big difference.

However, if the damage is already done, try these simple tricks to soothe and heal tired zombie eyes:

  • Grab a fresh cucumber and cut two thin slices. Apply one slice to each eye while lying on your back. Let them sit for 10 minutes to soak up the natural juices from the cucumber. This will not only help to lighten the skin, but also soothe and cool the eyes.

  • Next time you make tea, save your tea bags (just make sure it’s caffeinated, and preferably green, white, or black tea) and let them cool on a plate. Once they’re cool, place a tea bag over each eye and let them sit for 10 minutes. The caffeine in the tea bag will diminish puffiness by flushing out the water in the tissues around the eyes. Bonus: Tea also contains antioxidants that are beneficial to the skin! For super puffy eyes, try using Chamomile tea–it’s an anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce swelling and puffiness even more.

Have you ever experienced the “zombie eye” effect after staring at your computer screen for too long? Let me know in the comment section below. Also, let me know if you’ve tried either of these tricks at home.
