Even though I’m no longer in school (I’m a student of life), I know how tough it can be to go through a week or two full of final exams and projects at the end of the year. I don’t think anyone truly feels mentally or physically prepared for the torture that is finals. You want to check out but you have something that could determine your entire grade, and it’s nerve-racking, because it could all come down to this. Scary? YES! But it’s not impossible to keep your sanity – and health – in check during finals. In order to get through any big test week, or even a crazy week at work if you’re not in school – simply make sure these four things are incorporated into your routine whenever necessary:

1.) Go on a run, hike or hit the gym. Your body needs some stress-relieving exercise more now than ever. If you’re feeling exhausted at just the thought, don’t overwork yourself, but be sure to get your heart rate up for a few minutes for a much needed endorphin release and time to refresh yourself and mental state.

2.) Get plenty of sleep. It’s true that proper sleep is a necessity, I know it and you know it, but it’s the first thing to go during finals week. At this point, you know your body and how much sleep it requires to be at your best the next day. Do your best to get that much because with something as high-pressure as a day full of tests, you really need to be on your a-game.

3.) Take a quality break. Even if it’s quick. As much as breaking to veg out in front of the TV or part with friends is tempting, it’s probably more beneficial to take a power nap, exercise like I mentioned above or center yourself with meditation or a brisk walk. Something that allows your mind to drift from worry but stay focused on what’s important, is key.

4.) Get help when you need it. If a big test is coming up and you’re really concerned, it never hurts to ask for assistance. I know that sometimes in this situation bringing someone in and letting them in on the fact that you’ve struggled for weeks isn’t fun, but honestly when you’re out of school you’ll realize it was the best possible way to prepare! School is filled with helpers, let them do their jobs!
