Being on camera can make me overly aware of my complexion and hair. Covering up blemishes and dark under-eye circles from a long night of editing is easy, but maintaining my hair’s health and shine takes a little more forethought. Since I’ve made a few color changes to my locks this past year, it’s important for me to take the proper steps to not only keep my color vibrant, but also avoid split ends. If you’ve recently tackled this Beauty Do, then you’ll want to preserve your treated tresses with one or more of these tricks.
Deep conditioning can do wonders for your locks. Before you color your hair, deep condition it to counter the damage dyes and bleaching can cause. But don’t stop with one pre-treatment, during a down night catching up on your favorite show, nourish your cuticles and color with a weekly mask. There are plenty of store bought masks that will pack a punch, but DIY masks work just as well.
Bed head isn’t always a style I’m willing to wear, but washing your hair every single day isn’t ideal either. Whether your hair is treated, or you’re proudly all-natural, leave a few days in-between washes to allow the natural oils of your hair to nourish your locks. If you’re not sure how to hold out another day, try a high bun or braid to mask greasy strands and breakage.
Use only cool to cold water when washing your hair. That sounds a bit like torturing yourself at the end of a shower, but I swear it’s worth a twinge of chill. Using hot water to remove products from your tresses will not only be drying, it can also cause your color to bleed. There is nothing worse than losing your shiny hair prematurely!
Avoid over-drying or excessive product usage. When I’m going out with the girls or experiencing a long day on set (like I did for my new project), I expect my hair to maintain its waves. However styling tends to mean multiple products and tools–everything from a straightner to blowdryer to mousse to anti-frizz serum. With all of these products your hair can take a beating. Simplify your routine every so often. Your stylist and treated hair will thank you.
